May is National Athritis Awareness Month and is a great time to shine a light on the fact that arthritis is the most common cause of disability in adults in the United States. By 2030, the number of adults affected with doctor-diagnosed arthritis is projected to reach 67 million, or 25% of the adult population. How many of you have already been told you have arthritis? And what does that mean for you and your wallet?
According to The United States Bone and Joint Initiative “per-person expenditures for osteoarthritis and allied disorders was $11,029 averaged for the years 2008 to 2011. Aggregate medical expenditures for the estimated 30.8 million persons with osteoarthritis and allied disorders in the United States averaged $340 billion in each of the years 2008 to 2011.” The average medical expenditure per-person for those suffering from arthritis is over $11,000 per year!!! Not only is this expensive for your wallet but think about what it costs in terms of lack of mobility, lack of function and decreased quality of life!! Those are big prices to pay in addition to the financial burden!!
